In London, it’s very hard to get away from the city. I like to search for hidden streets, the silence gaps in a park where kids’ voices are unable to echo beyond trees. That’s something I love about rooftop bars. Despite my fear of heights, when I am up high, I feel like I am looking at the world as opposed to the world being on top of me.
There are lots of rooftop bars in the city for a great date night. But many feel overcrowded, overly expensive, and difficult to fully enjoy unless you reserve a prime viewing location.
Recently, I visited PocketSquare to review a date night experience. Located on Whitechapel Road, near trendy Shoreditch, I found that sense of hidden oasis. The place has an exclusive feel, particularly being situated on the 9th floor of the Hyatt Place London City East Hotel where no signs on the street direct you to the bar.
A skyline destination, PocketSquare defines itself as ‘intimate, tailored luxury with an east London flourish and personality.’ The décor beautifully balances a sense of extravagance with a cool contemporary vibe. Although a rooftop bar with incredible views that stretch to Canary Wharf and the 02, the bold interior makes the inside just as appealing.
PocketSquare Skyline Bar and Terrace Menu
My boyfriend and I were lucky to have a few moments to ourselves to capture images before the DJ mixed chilled house music and the dates turned up. A blend of people filled the space, each adding to the buzzing atmosphere.
For my review, we tried a selection of bite-sized dishes and drinks. Every mini meal has a recommended cocktail pairing. We both fell in love with the Slowcooked Oxtail Slider (heaven in a burger bun) and the Quail Scotch Egg Nest presented to look like a mini nest.
We also enjoyed the Tempura Fried Chicken and a Chocolate Bourbon Mousse. This was delicious but quite rich and perhaps not as creamy as I would have hoped.
PocketSquare has their own drinks lab where they craft bespoke cocktails. My banana pina colada for instance, was fermented in house. If you are bored of the same cocktails and want something more fun to drink, I dare you to find somewhere else with such interesting creations. The signature cocktails all have their own story.
Take IN2ART – a collaboration between PocketSquare and Intoart, a London art studio that works with people with learning disabilities at the forefront of their mission.
A gin-led bar, PocketSquare surprises you with unexpected cocktail ingredients: Mango & Chili Marmalade, marshmallows, caramel sauce. Do not be afraid to ask for help on drinks suggestions. Staff are very helpful and passionate about the different concoctions they craft.
Date night rooftop dreams
When my review was over, we bought some drinks and continued our date night into the late evening. I played my favourite game – trying to decide which couple was on a first, second or third date.
PocketSquare is a date night location that is affordable and yet so expensively tailored. Any silent moments are drowned out by the music, the scenic views, and the curious menu. I like that they are artisan and one-of-a-kind – that I can’t just go and order a Mixtape anywhere.
While the location is still somewhat new and exclusive, now is the time to book and enjoy it for yourself. Take in the skyline and find some city peace amongst the lively atmosphere. Oh, and if you get cold, there are heaters and blankets awaiting you.
