The last time I went to a circus, it was at a pop-up tent on a local field where actors in animal costumes performed with jugglers and acrobats. While not my idea of entertainment, it made my 6-year-old sister laugh. Years later, I find myself at another circus, only this time it’s designed for adults. Welcome to London’s Circus bar and restaurant.
This is a place where unique and quirky circus and cabaret performers amaze you with their acts as you sip on cocktails and dine on Pan-Asian food. If you are wondering where to go for your next date night in London, may I suggest here.
Description:
Circus London restaurant is situated on Endell Street, a 5-minute walk from Covent Garden and Leicester Square station. This is one of my favourite areas in London because there are so many places to explore.
Your visit to Circus begins with a perfect Instagram backdrop – a plant wall with pink neon lights. This is an ideal spot for photos because once inside, you are greeted by a dark room that lights up for performers.
As you walk in, you will see the stage at the front (that you can dine on) with tables behind and a bar area to the side.
My experience of Circus London:
My boyfriend and I visited on a Wednesday which surprisingly, was still somewhat busy. We were greeted by two glasses of prosecco brought over by a friendly waiter. Within minutes, we enjoyed watching our first performer – an aerialist who can spin multiple times in quick sucession.
During our night, we watched four performers in total. Mystery surrounded each act – we didn’t know who was performing next or at what time.
The short bursts of entertainment were well worth the wait. From the fire-breather to the hand balancer, aerialist, and contortionist, each performer put on an immaculate show and grasped every diner’s attention.
Circus London Menu
Together, we had a bottle of white wine and a cocktail named Rising from Yomi. Probably one of the sweetest on the menu, it contains spiced rum, passion fruit, almond, guava, and citrus. I love a good cocktail – this one delivered.
The Circus London menu focuses on Pan-Asian food, designed by chef Andrew Lassetter. We tried the Sharing Menu which costs £55 per person on Wednesdays & Thursdays and £65 per person on Fridays and Saturdays. For starters, we had Aromatic duck & plum gyoza (a must-try!), with King prawn tempura and Chicken teriyaki & lotus crips.
My boyfriend had Korean chili baby chicken for mains while I enjoyed Ginger & lemon seabass. As much as we try to experiment, we often find ourselves at Italian restaurants gorging on pizza and pasta. So it was fantastic to try different cuisine. I cannot falter the menu apart from the limited dessert options. We opted for Candy Shop Mess, a mini bowl comprised of sorbet and chocolate.
Restaurants sometimes bring out the mains immediately after the starter, as though to rush you along to free up your table. At Circus, we appreciated that we were given time to let our food settle before the next course.
Circus London Review: Conclusion
Overall, we had a fantastic and memorable night. Circus provided not only incredible food and drink, but a lively atmosphere, hospitable staff, fantastic entertainment and beautiful surroundings.
Would I change anything?
If I could change anything, I would have loved more dessert options on the menu. I have a big sweet-tooth and enjoy tasting something quite indulgent at the end of a meal.
Circus value as a unique date idea:
In the heart of the West End, the bar and restaurant Circus compliments the theatre of its location. If you are bored of going out and visiting the same standard places, why not give Circus a try?
I recommend the place for long-term couples that have been to countless restaurants – they’ve seen it all and want something new. I also believe Circus is ideal if you are hoping to impress someone on a first date. It’s fancy, intriguing, and ideal for those moments of potential silent pauses. Who needs to say think of something witty when a man is upside down in the air with just one hand on the ground?
Good to know:
- If you are planning a romantic date, be sure to book first.
- There is a set vegan menu which is also gluten-free
- A meal for two could set you back between £150 – £170. This includes a glass of prosecco. The cheapest bottle of wine costs £29. Cocktails are around £15 each.
